The mission of this project is to assist all victims of violent crimes within Coryell County by advising them of their rights, Crime Victims’ Compensation benefits, making referrals to resources needed, and helping them to understand the judicial system.
When you are the victim of a crime, your initial reaction is likely to be emotional and charged with tension. If the person responsible for the crime can be identified, the criminal justice system, which can be bewildering, becomes involved. Victims can be left feeling that they have totally lost control of what is happening to them.
The criminal justice system historically has been designed to guard the rights of the defendant. Today, positive steps are being taken to protect the rights and dignity of the person who did not ask and did not deserve to be involved with the system in the first place - the victim. Our office offers specialized assistance to crime victims of misdemeanor and felony offenses throughout the court process and to provide criminal justice support, advocacy and resource information that can help you in the aftermath of a crime.
Established in 1996, the Coryell County Crime Victims’ Office is a division of the 52nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office and exists to address the needs of people directly affected by violent crime in Coryell County, Texas. The program educates crime victims about the criminal justice process and provides information about social service agencies that can best handle their particular needs. Our fundamental mission is to ensure quality services are provided to victims of crime suffering from psychological trauma, physical injuries and financial losses. Our office is located on the third floor of the Coryell County Courthouse. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and we are closed for lunch from 12-1 p.m.
The Crime Victims’ Office serves as a liaison between the victims of violent crime and the criminal justice system, including law enforcement, prosecutors, court and other service providers. We are a primarily grant funded office and currently receive and administer federal and state funded grants, namely Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) and Victim Coordinator Liaison Grant (VCLG) grants.
It is important to us that the victims know and understand how the court system functions. Our goal is to ensure that each victim of a violent crime has the opportunity to have input into the ultimate decision of how the offender is prosecuted and punished and advocate on their behalf in the criminal justice system. We serve a diverse population that includes victims regardless of gender, race, age, socioeconomic status. During the 2006-07 fiscal year, the Coryell County Crime Victims’ Office served approximately 827 victims of violent crime and their families.
